Few racing games for the PlayStation can approach Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit in terms of car selection, track layout, and sheer fun. Combine the game's quality with the fact that it was added to the PlayStation's bargain Greatest Hits collection, and you have a title that deserves to be in the library of any racing fan.Hot Pursuit gets its name from our favorite mode of gameplay, in which players try to exceed the reach of the long arm of the law by greatly exceeding the speed limit. The ultimate goal is to beat your opponent to the finish line, but usually it's hard enough just dodging oncoming traffic, swerving around police roadblocks (complete with spike strips), and trying to keep pursuit vehicles from slamming you off the road. It's nearly as fun to watch replays as it is to race, and we've only discussed one of the game's five types of play. This diverse, fast-paced racer is definitely a keeper. --T. Byrl Baker
Pros:
- Nearly perfect arcade racing action
- Nice graphics, special effects, and sounds
- Some modes of play are incredibly difficult
- Can't play as the police

Gran Turismo is the new definition of a great racing game. With wonderful graphics, TV-like replays, and an entire host of cars to chose from, this instant classic goes beyond a driving game into the realm of driving simulator. You can choose between the arcade version (featuring classic cars such as Corvettes and Aston Martins) or the simulation, which is the true heart of the game. The simulation starts you on an entire racing career beginning with a cheap used car and second-rate tracks. You will find yourself longing for the Dodge Viper as your sad $10,000 starting fund puts you behind the wheel of a used Honda Prelude or Mazda RX-7. As you win races, acquire money, and earn advanced licenses, you are able to buy better cars and race in more competitive matches right up to the GT World Cup.Complete with cunning renditions of actual car models and a very playable interface, this game is great for the serious racing simulation fan and the casual gamer. It promises instant action and the kind of gradual advancement that keeps gamers playing for weeks. While the license tests can be hard, the fun track design and sheer number (140-plus) and variety of cars to choose from makes this an exciting race experience. --Allen Stewart
Pros:
- Great graphics
- More than 140 accurately modeled cars
- Awesome replays--actually looks like a TV race
- Steep learning curve

Even if you're not the type to bleat out the 1975 hit "Convoy" over a CB radio, you'll probably still get the sweats thinking about racing with 20 tons of cargo pushing your rig. In Eighteen Wheeler: American Pro Trucker, you'll choose between four 18-wheel trucks, and then ride against rival truckers and the clock as you try to deliver your payload intact and on time. The game offers 20 stages from New York to San Francisco, as well as four play modes: Arcade, Parking Challenge, Score Attack, and Versus. Eighteen Wheeler is compatible with separately sold steering-wheel controllers. -

ROCKSTAR GAMES
NASCAR Thunder 2002 roars to the front of the pack with a revolutionary new graphics engine from the developers of Madden NFL, a new career mode, and a new level of interactivity that brings the racetrack to life. Get "in the game" like never before: hear what the driver hears, see what the driver sees, and feel what the driver feels. NASCAR Thunder 2002 features more cars than ever on the track, realistic car damage, and dynamic track environments with dragging car parts and rolling tires. You can make your own NASCAR legend by creating your own car in the paint shop and working your way up through the ranks, adding sponsors and better equipment as you win on the track. NASCAR Thunder 2002 also features an Easy Play mode with driving assists for new players, all 23 NASCAR tracks--including the Chicagoland Speedway and Kansas Speedway--the new Dodge cars, and updated teams, drivers, and paint schemes for the 2001 season. With an ultra-fast new rendering engine from the team behind Madden NFL 2001, the game allows for a huge number of cars on the track running at a persistent 60 frames per second under all conditions, including multiplayer. This allows more detail than ever before, including heat shimmer, rich depth of field, and car hoods that vibrate from air friction. All 23 tracks are represented, including the newest NASCAR speedways, every NASCAR star, rookie, and veteran, and all four car manufacturers, including Dodge. Go head-to-head with Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon, Dale Jarrett, Bobby Labonte, Rusty Wallace, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Burton, Bill Elliot, Michael Waltrip, and Steve Park at Daytona, Rockingham, Vegas, or any other track on the circuit.
You can now race for the championship over multiple seasons. Choose a manufacturer, paint your car, and then earn offers and decals from new sponsors based on your performance. Use your race winnings to equip your crew and vehicle, increasing horsepower, handling, and pit crew performance. You can even earn the right to race for an existing NASCAR team. As you race through multiple seasons, new drivers will come on to the scene while others retire. New levels of realism let cars dent and crumple as they collide, and auto body parts fly off or drag on the track to leave a trail of sparks. Other damage effects include tire donuts on body panels, tire smoke, and oil fires.
