Mario Party is the first of several Mario games planned for this year that are being created by developers outside of Nintendo. In this case, the developer is Hudson, a company best known for the Bomberman series, while the others are HAL Systems, the creator of the Kirby line (which is handling the Mario fighting game, Smash Brothers), and Hot Shots Golf maker Camelot (which is doing Mario Golf). Each of the games' focus plays to what the developers know best, in this case, Hudson's knowledge of good multiplayer game modes gleaned from producing countless incarnations of Bomberman, the seminal party-game series -

Back in the early 1990s, after the world had gone mad for Tetris, Nintendo put out its own variant of the puzzle game that, unlike most clones of the day, actually brought some new life to the original idea. Now the classic Nintendo game, with some improvements of its own, is reintroduced for the Nintendo 64. Rather than just twisting shapes to fill vacant spaces, Dr. Mario 64 will have you matching capsule-shaped pills to fight like-colored viruses. Players earn point bonuses when stringing combos together. Dr. Mario 64 comes with the original one- and two-player modes, and introduces a simultaneous four-player mode. -

Wheel of Fortune comes loaded with 3,879 puzzles, so it could be well into the next millennium before you encounter a familiar phrase. The 30 categories include Place, Thing and Person. You can choose three-, four- or five-round matches or opt for a full match, which is a timed challenge. The big cash winner at match's end enters a $25,000 bonus round, in which the letters R, S, T, L, N and E are provided if they occur in the answer. The winner gets to pick three more consonants and one vowel, then has 20 seconds to solve the puzzle and become a really big wheel. Play Control is as simple as it gets. You tug and release the Control Stick to spin, then pick your letter with the A Button. Rumble Pak support gives you the feel of the wheel grinding to a halt. Even non-players will quickly get into the swing of things, which makes Wheel of Fortune one of the best family paks available! -

The Nintendo 64 doesn't have a lot of puzzle games, so we really take notice when something in that category is released. At first glance it looked like Wetrix's unique elements and great graphics would make for one of the best puzzle games of all time, but this title has some unfortunate problems that keep it from the top of the heap.Gameplay consists of arranging various descending pieces of land in an attempt to raise or lower the terrain that covers the main game board. This creates areas where lakes can form once the water finally starts falling from the sky. Sound strange? It is, but it's also a lot of fun at first. The water graphics are good, and things get hectic as water begins spilling over your carefully created pools and you have to scramble to mend the breaches. To add to the action, the game includes power-ups that let you get rid of some of the water. However, you'll have to act quickly to catch the power-ups as they fall from above.
Unfortunately, Wetrix gets old after a few days of play, and it doesn't have the instant yet long-term addictive qualities of a classic puzzle game like Tetris. But it's still a good time and a good buy if you are a big fan of games in this genre. --T. Byrl Baker
Pros:
- Nice water graphics
- Hectic gameplay
- Doesn't have the staying power of a classic like Tetris
