Somehow, Take Two Interactive managed to squeeze the controversial Grand Theft Auto into the tiny confines of a Game Boy cartridge. Unfortunately, most of the elements that made this game fun on other systems were lost in the translation. The basic premise remains intact: you play the role of a hoodlum trying to work your way up the ladder of crime. This is accomplished by committing hundreds of unsavory acts, from simple carjacking to complex missions assigned by the city's crime lords. Eventually the cops become wise to your evil deeds and hunt you down, which adds an extra layer to the gameplay.
The problems with this conversion are numerous. City streets that should be teeming with traffic are mostly bare. It's difficult even to find a car to steal, and actually driving the ungainly beasts is even harder due to poor turning-radiuses and a terrible control scheme. Die-hard fans of the original might like this, but everyone else should opt for the superior PlayStation or PC versions. --T. Byrl Baker
Pros:
- Works with original Game Boy
- Graphics are decent on Game Boy Color
- Horrible controls
- Carjacking has never been so difficult

While it pales in comparison to its 3-D counterpart on the PlayStation, the developers of this 2-D Game Boy version of the hit game Driver have managed to re-create much of the action and excitement that made the original game a sleeper hit. Slip into the role of a getaway driver and race through a crowded city environment in this fast-action racer. As with the PlayStation version, you still drive a getaway car through busy city streets, only in this game you view the action from a top-down perspective and the graphics have taken a nosedive in quality (for obvious reasons). Weaving through traffic and screeching around corners is as fun as it ever was, regardless of the low-detail levels. Whether you were a fan of the original version or just like driving games, Driver is a great way to hit the road when you're on the go. --T. Byrl Baker
Pros:
- Much of the gameplay from the PlayStation original is intact
- Tight controls
- Graphics are a little bland
- 2-D top-down perspective makes the game look flat
